‘Now You See Me’ is the new novel by Kierney Scott and it’s the first book in the Jess Bishop FBI Agent series. Thank you to the guys over at Bookouture for providing me with an Advanced Reader Copy and for allowing me to take part in the blog tour!
Blurb: As she saw his face for the first time, she knew he was going to kill her. She just didn’t know when.
When the dismembered body of Lydia Steiner is found washed up in the waters of a blisteringly hot Louisiana swamp, Detective Jess Bishop knows for certain this isn’t the murderer’s first kill. Three other dismembered bodies have been found, all bearing the same marks. Marks that strike fear into Jess’s heart. They are identical to those from a case she’s spent her entire career trying to forget.
As Jess and her team try to link the victims, another body is discovered and they fear the serial killer is taunting them. They know it’s only a matter of time before he kills again. As the body count rises, and the hunt goes cold, Jess knows she has to confront her past in order to catch the killer, even if that means making herself the bait…
As soon as I read the synopsis for this book on Netgalley, I knew I’d enjoy it. And I wasn’t wrong. From the moment I started reading it, I couldn’t put it down. I started reading this book on a Saturday afternoon and I had finished it by Sunday night. It was amazing!
For me, the character of Jess Bishop made this book. Kierney has done such a good job at creating such a complex character. Almost all of the crime books I have read have a lead detective character who is easy going and meticulous when it comes to their work. So, it was so refreshing to have Jess Bishop as the main character. She’s socially awkward, terrible at small talk and doesn’t know how to flirt. She has her guard up, which makes it hard for people to get to know her. She doesn’t really trust anyone and she usually always follows the correct protocol in regards to her job but… wait for it … she makes mistakes sometimes. Because she’s human. She really reminds me of Dr. Brennan from Bones.
Admittedly, I didn’t like Jess Bishop at first. I thought she was unwelcoming and rude. But within a few chapters, my option completely changed. I loved her. I don’t want to give too much away, but you do find out why Jess is the way she is. And you wonder how she can be so ‘normal’ considering everything she has been through!
Another thing I loved about this book is that it kept me guessing. I suspected everyone at one point. And then I’d read a bit more and change my mind. Then change it back again. You get the picture. I was 90% through the book and I still had no idea! When all the pieces came together it made me gasp. As a fan of crime books, there is nothing more disappointing than figuring out who done it earlier on. This is something that I didn’t need to worry about with ‘Now You See Me’.
If you like books that keep you can’t put down from the moment you open it and keep you guessing with their ‘edge of your seat’ suspense, then this is the book for you.
